A New Chapter for Casey’s CEO
Darren Rebelez, the CEO of Casey’s General Stores, and his wife made a significant move from Los Angeles to West Des Moines when he took on the role of leading the Ankeny-based convenience store chain. From their first visit to the area, they were captivated by the vibrant community and the thriving cycling culture that Des Moines has to offer.
Before joining Casey’s in 2019, Rebelez had a long and varied career in the convenience store and restaurant industries. He spent 25 years in these sectors, holding management positions at ExxonMobil and Thornton Oil Co., serving as the chief operating officer at 7-Eleven, and most recently as the president of IHOP in Pasadena, California. His extensive background has provided him with a unique perspective on the industry.
In an era where many executives work remotely, Rebelez has taken a different approach. He has actively recruited C-suite staff to the Des Moines area, emphasizing the importance of being present and engaged with the company. For Rebelez, simple pleasures like riding his bike on the High Trestle Trail or stopping at a Casey’s in Perry for lunch are part of what makes the area so appealing.
Rebelez’s commitment to the Des Moines area is not just professional but personal. He believes that living in the same place where the company is based allows him to lead more effectively. This philosophy extends to his recruitment efforts, where he highlights the advantages of the Des Moines area over other locations.
Why Des Moines?
When asked why he chose to live in Des Moines, Rebelez emphasized that it is where the company is based. He acknowledges that some CEOs might prefer to work remotely, but for him, being physically present is essential. He also pointed out that the Des Moines area offers several advantages for executives considering a move.
Compared to warmer climates or coastal areas, Des Moines has a lower cost of living, better schools, and a safer environment. The community is friendly, and there is less traffic, making it an attractive option for families. While winter is a challenge, Rebelez notes that many parts of the country experience similar conditions, and people have found ways to thrive in the area.
Lessons from the Past
Rebelez’s early experiences in the workforce have shaped his leadership style. His first job in high school was as a dishwasher at the San Diego Zoo, which gave him a firsthand look at the hard work and dedication required in the service industry. This experience instilled in him a deep appreciation for the people who work in the stores and restaurants, reinforcing the idea that the success of the company depends on its employees.
At 7-Eleven, he learned the importance of merchandising and understanding consumer needs. These lessons have carried over to his current role at Casey’s, where he focuses on ensuring that the right products are available to customers. He believes that even the friendliest service or the lowest prices won’t make a difference if the products don’t meet customer expectations.
Looking Ahead
Rebelez, who is 59 years old, has recently renewed his contract, indicating that he plans to stay in his role for the foreseeable future. He enjoys the work and the team he leads, and he finds satisfaction in the growth and development of the company.
What he loves most about his job is the opportunity to work with a dedicated team and to be part of a business that is doing well. He takes pride in the company’s ability to invest in its employees and help them grow their careers.
Personal Interests
In his free time, Rebelez enjoys cycling, golf, and spending time with his family. He also likes watching TV shows such as “Yellowstone” and “1923,” which he and his wife enjoy together. When it comes to food, his favorite pizza topping is pepperoni.
Rebelez’s journey from Los Angeles to Des Moines has been one of adaptation and growth. His decision to move to the area has not only benefited his personal life but has also helped shape the direction of Casey’s General Stores. As he continues to lead the company, his commitment to the community and the people who work there remains strong.
